Transform Your Garden on a Budget

August 02, 2022

Feel like your garden needs a little pick-me-up but don’t have the budget to do anything extravagant? You don’t need much to spruce up your outdoor space. Here are five simple ways to transform your garden on a lean budget.

The Power of Paint

A splash of colour can transform a space, breathing new life into older décor. A watering can becomes a piece of art when it’s painted to match your flowers, or an old border fence comes back to life after a new coat of fresh, crisp white. Want to make the most out of what’s lying around? Gather rocks from your neighbourhood and get out the pallets and brushes to see what you come up with. This is an especially fun activity to get the whole family involved in!

Start with Seeds

It may be convenient to purchase already blooming flowers but by far the cheapest way to start a new garden is by sowing seeds. Whether you choose plants, flowers, or even veggies and herbs, it’s important to check the seed packets to determine how much space and light they need. Not all seeds like the same treatment and some don’t grow well with others. The good news is seeds are extremely cheap so give it a try watch as the plants start growing and your thumb gets greener.

Gather and Group

While seeds are an inexpensive way to grow your garden, they do take time and sometimes you just want something to show NOW. When it comes to planting flowers, you can get more visual bang for your buck when you group bold colours in clusters so that they really stand out. Negative space is your friend here. You don’t need to fill every inch with growth to make a big impact.

Master the Mulch

Continuing the last point…if you want to do more with the open spaces in your garden AND improve the health of your plants, mulch is a fun way to add a professional feel. It tidies up the space giving a clean finish while making your garden feel fuller and more vibrant. From uncoloured mulch to dark blacks or even red, choose the colour that accents your home best.

Rock and Roll

Not sure you have the time or energy to maintain a garden in full bloom? Decorative gravel and rocks are the perfect substitutes. You can play with fun shapes, colours, and textures and add depth to the look of your lawn. If you want a little greenery thrown in the mix, there are many easy-to-care-for shrubs and bushes that act as amazing accents. You can also collect logs, driftwood, and really anything that is visually appealing. The sky is the limit when you think outside of the box.
